Every Death In HBO’s “The Wire”
The Wire was broadcast on HBO from June 2, 2002 until March 9, 2008 and, in many people’s opinion, is the greatest American crime/drama series ever created. There’s something special about The Wire because it doesn’t just show the typical corny “police arrest a drug dealer” storyline like every other crime show on TV does. The Wire shows every angle of the drug game from dealers, street bosses and kingpins and the everyday bullshit they have to deal with including fiends running off with packages and the police raiding drug corners to murder trials and dealing with scumbag lawyers. It also shows law enforcements’ angle and how the police are pressured to make arrests out of the tiniest misdemeanors and turn them into felonies, how police administration applies pressure to increase the arrest rates, and how city hall forces the police administration to handle what needs handling. It basically shows the crookedness of the politicians, the police, the news reporters, and pretty much everyone involved from start to finish.
The writing, by David Simon who was a real Baltimore Sun newspaper crime reporter, and Ed Burns, a Baltimore City homicide detective & school teacher, hit the nail on the head with every episode. If you’ve ever played around in the street then you know what’s true and what’s not. Everything in and about this show is authentic. The slang words, the chain of command for both the police and the drug dealers, the politicians, etc.
If you’ve never seen The Wire you can check out the trailer below. After the trailer is a video that shows every murder scene from all five seasons, put together nicely from a fan on YouTube.
