KAWS Curates 350+ Drawings in “The Way I See It”

The Drawing Center in New York City recently unveiled The Way I See It, a landmark exhibition featuring over 350 artworks curated by KAWS. Drawn from his personal collection of more than 3,000 works on paper, the selection includes pieces by an estimated 500 artists. This exhibition continues The Drawing Center’s dedication to showcasing drawings from both historical and contemporary contexts while offering insight into the tastes of diverse collectors worldwide.

Spanning the 20th and 21st centuries, The Way I See It features works across genres, including comics, commercial illustrations, and graffiti black books. Notable artists featured include Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning, comic artist R. Crumb, Pop Art pioneer Peter Saul, sculptor H.C. Westermann, and the legendary Pablo Picasso. Additionally, the exhibition includes pieces from KAWS’ graffiti contemporaries like Todd James, FUTURA 2000, DONDI, SERVE, and DAZE.

“For KAWS, this collection serves as a personal reference library—a way to study artistic evolution, think abstractly about the marks of a drawing, and remind himself that art can be made in many ways. Living with other artists’ work is ‘energy, food,’ KAWS has said, underscoring how these works influence his own artistic practice,” The Drawing Center noted.

The Way I See It is on view until January 19, 2025.
