The World’s First Underwater Coral Graffiti Piece By 1UP Crew
Graffiti is often associated with vandalism or festivals, and we rarely discuss a graffiti crew embarking on a project that deviates from the norm in terms of placement and vision. In December of last year, Berlin’s 1UP Crew created an installation at the Juxtapoz Clubhouse in Miami. Since then, they have been travelling and recently made a stop at Nusa Penida, a small island off Bali, where they built a coral farm inside an environmentally safe “1UP” tag/frame.
One crew member explained, “Some of our crew members are passionate about diving and surfing, and we had been dreaming of an underwater installation for a long time. When we were invited to the Seawalls festival in Allcapsstore last year, we saw an opportunity!”
“Along with exhibiting and painting walls, we wanted to raise awareness about the environmental changes in that region, particularly those related to the ocean. We came up with the idea of creating an underwater installation and building a coral farm where coral could grow. It took us some time to figure out how to make it happen, but we did it! We created the world’s first underwater 3D installation that functions as an artificial coral reef to help regenerate corals and marine life in Nusa Penida, Bali!”
Over the past 30 years, the world has lost roughly half of its coral reefs, and scientists estimate that 90% of corals will die by 2050 due to human impact.
