Amazon Prime Might Offer Customers Free Cellular Service To Members
When I saw that Amazon Prime might offer customers free cellular service to it’s members I can’t help but wonder how much money Amazon actually makes. I mean to offer their Prime customers free cellular service they have to be rolling in money. I mean I know that they are one of the largest businesses on the planet, but to give away free data to who knows how many customers is wild. I could see if they owned their own spectrum or cellular frequencies, which would still cost them an arm & a leg to just give away for free. One thing you gotta admit about Amazon, Prime especially, is they definitely know how to give you your money’s worth if you subscribe [to Prime].
Anyway, back to the info on the free cellular service. After checking out a few tech sites that I usually read articles on I came up with the following:
According to a report from Bloomberg, Amazon is said to be in discussions with major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, T-Mobile, Dish, and AT&T, to potentially offer mobile services to its Prime members. The services could be offered either for free or at significantly reduced prices. However, it should be noted that no concrete decisions have been made by Amazon at this stage, and the plan may not materialize if the negotiations do not prove fruitful. It could take several months before any official announcement is made regarding this matter. Currently, Amazon has denied having any plans to provide cellular services, stating that while they are always exploring additional benefits for Prime members, wireless services are not in their immediate plans.
In response to the report, both Verizon and T-Mobile have denied engaging in any talks with Amazon regarding the proposed mobile service. A spokesperson from Verizon stated that they are not negotiating with Amazon for the resale of their network, although they remain open to potential opportunities in the future.
Prime membership, which costs $139 per year or $14.99 per month, already offers numerous benefits, including free two-day shipping, same-day shipping in select areas, access to Prime Video, Amazon Music, Prime Gaming, and more. Additionally, Prime members receive early access to discounts during Prime Day sales and a complimentary one-year Grubhub+ membership. Considering the existing value provided by Prime subscriptions, a free or heavily discounted mobile service would be an attractive addition for Prime members. However, it remains to be seen whether Amazon’s plans will come to fruition.
