If the manufacturer of this new device is reliable, it could be the most significant advancement in personal security tech since firearms. Called “Unplugged (UP),” it’s a secure smartphone that aims to address nearly every security flaw of Apple iPhones and Android phones. But the key question is about its creator, Erik Prince—known for Blackwater, Xe Services, and Academi. If neither the CIA nor Mossad is involved (Unplugged is based in Israel), the UP Phone could be the ultra-secure, private device Prince claims.
The Unplugged phone will run on LibertOS, a privacy-focused operating system, and comes with the UP Suite of secure apps: UP Messenger, UP Antivirus, and UP VPN. According to its marketing, users will feel secure with the UP Phone anywhere and can set an emergency passcode that wipes data and alerts contacts. Prince also says the power button is a true kill switch, meaning the phone can’t be tracked once turned off. Unplugged claims that no one, not even they, will have access to your personal data.
All this rests on Prince’s credibility and whether or not intelligence agencies are involved. Time will tell, but if trustworthy, the UP Phone could be the most significant handheld tech since the iPhone—and perhaps the most important personal security tool since firearms and body armor. It’s that big.
